GamerBraves Newsletter Vol. 106 - The Joys Of Vtuber Debuts
I have to admit, I like shiny new things. The thought of experiencing new things or events without prior knowledge to what something may be, is exciting; and the same can be said with Vtuber debuts.
Vtubers have undoubtedly been a huge part of many people’s lives, whether willingly or unwillingly, and suffice to say, they’re here to stay. As the trend continue to grows, so does the number of new debuts of both individuals and company-backed Vtubers trying to make a name for themselves.
Cool, new anime girls pop up, big deal. We technically get those with seasonal anime where people chase for their new waifus. So what exactly makes Vtuber debuts so interesting you might ask? Here’s some of it:
The Memes
Memes have inexplicably ingrained itself onto Internet culture, and that’s no different when it comes to the Vtuber sphere. Prior to their debut, fans have no way of telling what a talent’s personality would be like, aside from the limited interactions (which we’ll talk about later). Thus, Vtuber fans will do what they do best, speculate.
It’s always a fun time to browse through various social media platform such as Twitter or Reddit to check out some of the creative works that the community would concoct up.
Down the line, the memes created before the talent’s debut is a nice indicator to see how different the fan’s perspective of said Vtuber is. While most of the time, those predictions would be wrong, it’s still an overall enjoyable time engaging with other community members by discussing with virtual anime girl would most likely cause issues with the Youtube Community Guidelines.
Twitter Interactions
Before a Vtuber officially debuts, they would normally have set up their own social media accounts where they would bring up the hype within the community, kinda like the drip marketing strategies HoYoverse have with teasing various characters from their games.
Unlike drip marketing however, these twitter interactions a vtuber has is a two-way thing, whether it’s between other talent members or just with the community itself.
It’s also another way for a “vibe check” to potentially find a vtuber whose way of presenting themselves or sense of humour might gel well with you.
Let’s not forget about all the moments when a certain talent has their Twitter account being restricted due to a sudden influx of new followers within a short period of time.
For most cases, this sort of incident would be tied with something negative, but given how commonplace its become with Hololive members, both the community and talent can’t help but to poke fun of it, dubbing the incident as "Twitter Jail”
The Debut Streams
When all the pre-debut is done and dusted, next comes the most anticipated debut stream. This is where the almagamation of expectations and hype come into play, as we finally get the first glimpse of a Vtuber in real-time, along with the reveal of their voice.
A debut stream is always a fun and exciting time since we literally won’t know what’s in store. Considering how dense the Vtuber market is right now, it’s not uncommon for talents to come up with some sort gimmick for first impressions.
There’s your typical self-introduction revolving around the intricate lore revolving around their characters; and then there’s some of the more fun ones such as Kiryu Coco’s animated parody of The Little Mermaid, and the iconic Amane Kanata debut stream which had her be dubbed as “PPT (Power-Point Tenshi)” within the community.
Not to mention, it’s also fun to check out the other talents reaction to the debut stream, and get some funny interactions from it. Plus, it makes it feel less like you’re cheating on your current oshi.
Closing Thoughts
Vtuber debuts are always a way of celebrating fresh new faces coming to the scene considering how dynamics can change the most, especially when they start collaborating with other talents.
Not to mention, it also indirectly opens up to more people falling into the rabbit hole when they find that one Vtuber they really like for when they debut.
